Some of the following may only be immediately available to the students and faculty of Iowa State University. Article Databases and Indexes

The following databases provide access to journal articles, conference proceedings, book chapters, technical reports, patents, and other forms of chemical literature that report on research results.

  SciFinder Scholar provides access to some of the major chemistry databases provided by the Chemical Abstracts Service. These include the main Chemical Abstracts database (CAPlus) as well as CASREACTS (reaction information) and the Registry file (information identifying various chemical substances). The software to use this database must be downloaded from the CAS website and loaded on the user's computer. For additional help in using the database the CAS Learning Center has a number of help materials.
• Powder Diffraction File (PDF-4+)

  The Powder Diffraction File (PDF) is a collection of single phase X-ray powder diffraction patterns, maintained and distributed by the International Centre for Diffraction Data (ICDD). The data for each pattern are presented in the form of table of characteristic interplanar spacings and corresponding relative intensities. Miller indices and other supplemental data, such as crystal system, density, or cell information, are also included when known.
  PDF-4+ (2005) has comprehensive material coverage for inorganic materials as well as coverage of minerals and common organic materials. Each dataset contains diffraction, crystallographic and bibliographic data, as well as experimental, instrument and sampling conditions and select physical properties in a common standardized format.
  The 2005 release contains more than 240,050 entries and citations to nearly 272,000 references from more than 2,000 journals.

  Biosis Previews combines Biological Abstracts and Biological Abstracts/RRM (Reviews, Reports, Meetings) into one unified database with monthly updates. It contains citations to journal articles, meetings and conference reports, patents, books and patents. The database has extensive coverage of biochemistry, organic chemistry, and various topics relevant to chemistry.

  Compendex is one of the principal engineering databases. It covers chemical engineering as well as other areas of engineering that use chemical information.   ProceedingsFirst indexes an extensive collection of scientific and academic conference, workshops, symposia, and other meetings proceedings collected since 1993 by the British Library. It is a complementary database to PapersFirst.

  The Web of Science covers journal articles in all subject areas, including chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, and related areas. The database has standard indexing for over 7,000 journals but also indexes the references for all articles from those journals. The references can be separately searched to find articles that have cited the same publications. The citation indexed literature covers journal articles, books, conference proceedings, dissertations, technical reports, and other forms of literature. Electronic Books and Data Collections

The following databases provide information of use to chemists, especially information about the properties of different chemicals. • Cambridge Structural Database

  This database is a collection of crystallographic, chemical, and bibliographic data on small organic molecules whose 3d structure has been determined by x-ray or neutron diffraction. The database itself is made available at local laboratories (At Iowa State University this database is available at the Chemistry Instrumentation Facility.). The Centre also has free software for working with this type of data in various ways.
• ChemBank: Initiative for Chemical Genetics

  This is a collection of databases with information for over 900,000 organic compounds. The data includes identification information, structures, some physical properties, and other information.

  This is a directory of commercially available chemicals and chemical companies.

  This is a database of over 350,000 chemicals that appear in various National Library of Medicine databases. Information is included on different synonyms, identification information, structures, some physical property data, toxicity, etc. There are also links to other NLM databases and to other information sources on the Internet.

  This is a collection of databases with information on chemical compounds. The entries include basic chemical names and formulas, identification information such as CAS Registry Numbers, physical properties of the substances, literature references, and other related information.   CrossFire provides access to the major chemistry databases provided by the Beilstein Institute: the Beilstein and Gmelin databases. Beilstein is the online version of Friedrich Konrad Beilstein's Handbook of Organic Chemistry (Handbuch der organischen Chemie). It contains information on organic substances published in the chemical literature from 1771 to the present. Gmelin is the online version of Leopold Gmelin's Handbook of Inorganic Chemistry (Handbuch der anorganischen Chemie. It contains information on inorganic and organometallic substances published in the literature from 1648 to 1994.
• Crystallography Open Database (COD)

  This database contains x-ray crystallographic data from organic and inorganic compounds. In addition to basic information about crystals (coordinate data, cell parameters, chemical formulas, etc.) there are literature references. There is also a Predicted Crystallography Open Database (PCOD) on the site. These are Open Access databases of crystallographic data contributed by various organizations as well as individuals.

  European Patent Office

  esp@cenet is a database of information from patents and patent applications from the European Patent Office, the World Intellectual Property Organization, Japan, and the United States. Entries usually include basic bibliographic information from the patent and an abstract. There is full-text information available for some recent patent applications and United States patents in image files.
• Gmelin's Handbook of Inorganic Chemistry (Handbuch der anorganischen Chemie).

• HSDB (Hazardous Substances Databank)

  The HSDB contains information on hazardous chemical substances. In addition to information on the hazards associated with each chemical there is emergency treatment information, proper handling information, the use of the chemical, and other relevant data. Also included is a section of basic physical properties. All information is referenced.
• International Critical Tables of Numerical Data, Physics, Chemistry and Technology

  This large collection of information was originally edited in 1926-1930 by the National Research Council. Tables include physical properties data for chemicals and various substances, methods information, weights and measures, and similar types of data for chemists, physicists, and engineers. This electronic version is searchable.
• ITER (International Toxicity Estimates for Risk)

  ITER is a database with information about the risks due to over 600 toxic chemicals. References are included to the various reports that defined the health risks of each substance. It includes information from several U.S. government agencies and foreign government organizations.

  This is a collection of data for various chemicals. The dataset is searchable by chemical names, formulas, CAS registry number, structures, reactants, and various physical properties of chemicals.
• NMRShiftDB
  Max Planck Institute of Chemical Ecology

  This is a database of NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) spectra, structures, and associated records for organic compounds. The information has been contributed by scientists at various research organizations around the world. The database is searchable by spectra information, structure, molecular weight, and keywords. It is capable of predicting spectra information for unknown substances based on their carbon content (other elements will be added later).

  This is a database of information on organic chemicals. It contains structural information, some property data, and information on biological activity. It contains connections to information found in other NCBI and NLM databases including PubMed, Entrez, and others.
• Reciprocal Net

  This is a database of crystallograhic information, including several thousand structures and associated information, education modules on crystallography, and a collection of crystallographic computer programs. The information has been donated from a number of universities, government research laboratories, and other organizations.

  This is the electronic version of Houben–Weyl's Methods of Molecular Transformations (Methoden der Organischen Chemie (Methods of Organic Chemistry)). It collects descriptions of laboratory procedures used by organic chemists and evaluates them. The electronic version includes the entire work back to 1909.

  This is an online catalog of chemicals and chemical information. Substance entries contain some physical property and identification information for the chemicals.
• Spectral Data Base for Organic Compounds (SDBS)

  The SDBS is a collection of spectral data for organic compounds. Types of spectra include EI mass, NMR (various types), FT-IR, laser-Raman, and ESR.

  The various databases of the Patent and Trademark Office make available all publicly available patent information. The patents from 1976 to the present are available in a full-text, searchable file. Earlier patents can be searched in the database. Copies are available as images of the original print. In addition to the patent database there is also a database of patent applications.

  Since 1919 the Union has been one of the most important organizations supporting chemical research. It is especially involved in the naming of chemicals, chemical processes, and related matters. The site has information on the organization's current activities and copies of its documentation, including reports and supporting journal articles.

  IUPAC Compendium of Chemical Terminology is a collection of interactive definitions of nomenclature, terminology, symbols and units.

Electronic Journals

The Iowa State University Libraries subscribes to over 29,000 journals. These can be located by searching in the Library's catalog. Some of these journals are available in electronic form. Generally the catalog's record will have a link to the web page of journals that are available on the Internet. Another way to find the electronic journals that the library subscribes to is by going to the e-Journals & e-Books page on the Library's homepage. This list includes a summary of the issues that ISU faculty, staff and students have access to.

A number of the large publishers from whom the library acquires chemistry journals have special features on their websites such as the ability to automatically send users copies of new tables of contents or find articles containing particular keywords.
